Mitigation Checklist

Not every radon mitigation company adheres to the same standards. When choosing a company to handle such an important component of your home’s indoor air quality system, ensure you’re comparing apples to apples. The following items can assist you in making a smart decision:

> Licensing and certification
Is the company licensed and certified? Not all states require licensing or certification. Click here to find out the licensing requirements in your state.

Protect is certified through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) to conduct radon measurement / analysis and mitigation. NEHA is one of two certification boards endorsed by the US EPA. Where applicable, Protect is state-licensed. Protect is also a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and many local home builder associations.

> Standards and protocols
Does the company adhere to local building codes, as well as the standards and protocols endorsed by the US EPA? Since licensing in some states is not required, enforcement of US EPA protocols is often non-existent.

Protect strictly adheres to local building codes and the US EPA endorsed protocols for radon mitigation. Following local building codes and US EPA protocols can sometimes be difficult, but they’re in place for a reason – we follow them!

> On-site evaluation
Does the company provide a free on-site evaluation? In addition to being necessary to correctly lay out and size your radon system, an on-site meeting gives you an opportunity to ask questions, view photos and learn more about the company you choose to handle your installation.

Protect will not install a radon mitigation system without conducting an on-site evaluation. Knowing the details of the home is crucial to planning the most effective and aesthetically pleasing mitigation system. We’ll also take the time to answer your questions and show you photos of previous systems we’ve installed.

> Written proposal and agreement
Does the company provide a written proposal and agreement? Unless you get a written proposal and agreement, you may find your understanding of the details differ from your mitigation company’s!

Protect provides a clear and concise written proposal and agreement that outlines the scope of the project, pricing and warranty details. Click here to view our standard residential mitigation agreement.

> Written warranty and guarantee
Does the company provide a written warranty and guarantee? Again, unless you get a written warranty and guarantee, you may find your idea of what’s warranted and your mitigation company’s idea are different.

Protect provides a clear and concise written warranty and guarantee. Click here to view our warranty and guarantee.

> Post-installation support
What can you expect from the company after your mitigation system has been installed? One of the major complaints we hear about the mitigation industry is the customer feels ‘on their own’ after paying to have their system installed.

Protect conducts post-mitigation testing to ensure the level of radon gas has been reduced to below the US EPA action level. We also schedule a service visit each year to evaluate the system and re-test for compliance. A radon mitigation system is only effective when it’s maintained. Items such as remodeling, additional foundation settlement (increased cracking), and mechanical damage can all affect the ability of your system to maintain reduced radon gas levels.

> Insurance
Does the company carry general and professional liability insurance? Mistakes can happen – is the company you choose adequately prepared in the event a mistake does occur? Drilling into foundations, interior and exterior walls, and roofs can be challenging at times...

Protect carries both general and professional liability insurance policies to ensure when those issues that can sometimes go wrong with a mitigation system installation occur, you’re covered.
